Business name checklist

A rejected name search means paying and waiting again. Check your name against the common rejection reasons first.

It is not identical or near-identical to a name already registered BRS rejects names that are the same as, or confusingly close to, an existing registered business or company name. Run an official name search on eCitizen before you fall in love with a name. It does not use a restricted word without approval Words like "Chartered", "Authority", "Bank", "Sacco", "Cooperative", "Kenya", "National", "Royal" or "Trust" typically need a supporting letter from the relevant regulator or approval before BRS will allow them. It does not imply a government or royal connection it does not have Names suggesting affiliation with government, a county, or an official body are scrutinised and commonly rejected unless that affiliation genuinely exists. It is not offensive or misleading about what the business does A name that misrepresents the nature of the business, or that is offensive, can be refused at the registrar's discretion. You have 1-3 backup names ready If your first choice is rejected or already taken, having alternatives ready avoids a second round trip to eCitizen and a second wait.

This is general guidance, not a substitute for an official search. The only way to know if a name is actually available is a name search and reservation through eCitizen/BRS (Official Search on a business name costs KES 250, on a company name KES 650). Rejection rules are applied at the registrar's discretion and can vary by case.
